La Ronge high school student Miranda Merriman is making waves in the golfing community.

The Grade 11 student has been playing golf since 2021, and at the young age of 16, she’s starting to excel at the sport.

“When I started, I was not that good. Especially at my first tournament, it was a bit of a mess, but I think after four, five years now, I’m starting to get to that point in my golf game where it’s taking it to the next level and starting to see if I really can get good enough to go to college for this,” Merriman explained.

“Last year, I did really, really well. I played in the Maple Leaf Junior Tour. It’s a tour all around Canada, but specifically, they have tours in Saskatchewan. I placed very well at the events. I had one second-place finish and two third-place finishes. This qualified me to play at the Maple Leaf Junior Tour Championship in Florida. I played in their three-day championship and placed eighth out of 12, and I shot an 88, 91, 94.”

In 2025, Merriman also played in a qualifier tournament at Dakota Dunes and earned her way to a national championship in Montreal.

“I think I really started getting into it last year… just really seeing the opportunities I have. As of right now, I’m at the start of my tournament season, so it gets really busy,” she noted.

Merriman expects to compete in more than a dozen tournaments in the coming months. She already attended one in Swift Current and she has another one this weekend in Prince Albert.

Merriman is currently being coached by accomplished golfer Jeff Chambers. He began instructing her last year and since then she has noticed big improvements.

“It has just been a game-changer. We don’t do any in-person lessons, it’s all online. I have a simulator in my garage, and we do lessons through Zoom,” she remarked.

Merriman contributes much of her success to her parents Greg and Natasha Merriman, as well as Eagle Point Resort owner Lolita Poirier. Her parents attend many of her tournaments, while Poirer allows her to play golf free of charge at the course.

In the next couple of years, Merriman wants to improve her game and would like to one day play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the United States.

“I really want to go to the US and see how far I can take this, and get my name and the community out there. It’s not every day you see such a small community represented,” she said.
