‘A casino in your pocket’: Expert weighs in on online gambling boom
As the Saskatchewan government warns about fake online gambling ads circulating on social media, addiction experts say the greater concern is the growing risk of gambling addiction linked to increased exposure to online betting and casino-style platforms.
Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan (LGS) contracted a brand impersonation takedown service to identify fraudulent ads.
“In the first six months of using this service, it has identified and helped remove more than 140 fraudulent ads that were targeting Saskatchewan people by impersonating one of our province’s casinos,” said LGS Vice President of Gaming Steve Tunison.
With the CFL season beginning, LGS said scammers often take advantage of major sporting events to target online bettors, but Saskatchewan’s only legal online gaming platform is PlayNow.com.
