Piwapan Wellness Centre has launched a new post-secondary scholarship in memory of late journalist Valerie Barnes Connell Jordan.

“We honour Val’s contribution to our community, to honour the respect and love she had for the North,” a statement from the Piwapan board notes.

“We thank you Val for your friendship, your wisdom during your time on the board, and for always supporting us in all of our endeavours. You are missed, but will not be forgotten. At Piwapan, we want to share her memories with the future leaders of our communities through this scholarship.”

Jordan was a long-time resident of La Ronge, having reported on news and current events in the tri-communities and Northern Saskatchewan for decades. She was a reporter for The Northerner until is closed in 2015 and she most recently wrote for the Northern Advocate. Jordan passed away on March 9, 2026.

In order to apply for the $1,000 scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in full-time, post-secondary studies leading to a profession or career within the human services field. Applicants also must be of Indigenous ancestry, reside in or originate in a community serviced by the La Ronge Native Women’s Council, and express a commitment to providing service in Northern Saskatchewan. The deadline to apply is Sept. 1.

In a statement to larongeNOW, Jordan’s daughter Shannon Connell explained her mother was always concerned about the challenges facing youth, especially in the North. She said she’s grateful Piwapan has chosen to recognize Jordan in such an appropriate way.

“My mother loved the scenery in La Ronge, but it was the community, the people and the way they worked to help each other that made it her much-loved home.”
