The La Ronge Ice Wolves wore orange jerseys at their home game on Wednesday in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The jerseys were also symbolic of the team’s desire to recognize the survivors of residential schools, the ongoing healing, and the children who never made it home. The game included representation from the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, as well as officials with the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

“I thought it was a special day and it’s our opportunity just to be part of it and show respect and honour that day,” explained Head Coach Taylor Harnett.

“There were a lot of excited fans just to see us play hard. I’m sure we had some Elders in attendance and some survivors of residential school. I think the attendance was good and I think it was well received.”

The Ice Wolves played their fourth regular game of the season on Wednesday against the Nipawin Hawks. The Hawks took an early three-point lead; the Ice Wolves responded with two goals, including one on a powerplay. William Knox secured the team’s first goal with an assist by Everett Merchant, which was followed up by a second powerplay goal by Easton Kozak with assists by Liam Harry and Brock Inglis.

The comeback by the Ice Wolves fell short, however, as the Hawks were able to score two more goals by the end of 60 minutes and win the game with a 5-2 score.

“We didn’t get the result we wanted, but we knew what we were playing for, and sometimes that support doesn’t get recognized with the win, but we were truly grateful to have an opportunity to play in front of our fans,” Harnett added.

“It was a tough one from a hockey game standpoint because there were ups and downs in that game and I thought that going into the third period being down a few goals, I thought we still showed some big push back and it’s just something for us build on.”

The Ice Wolves now have a one-week break until they travel to take on the Warman Wolverines on Oct. 7.  The team currently has one win and three losses for two points on the season.
