The Town of La Ronge has secured animal control services until the end of the decade.

Council approved a $128,000 contract with Northern Animal Rescue (NAR) to provide on call services focused on at-large dog and cat complaints, as well as operations of the pound, in the municipality. The three-year term goes into effect Jan. 1, 2027, at a rate of $3,455 per month.

Animal control services have been delivered by NAR since 2018.

“NAR manages the pound, and keeps any boarding fees charged to owners or other jurisdictions for providing pound services,” a document prepared by town administration states.

“[The] town pays for maintenance and utilities to operate the pound; NAR provides other pound operating costs.”

The contract stipulates NAR will receive 75 per cent of animal control-related fines resulting from tickets issued in coordination with the town.

In 2025, NAR rescued 274 puppies, 104 dogs, 55 kittens and 48 cats (481 animals) in La Ronge and the surrounding communities. That’s up from 404 in 2024, but down from a record of 579 in 2019.

In addition, council also approved a $2,500 grant and $2,500 of in-kind support for the 2027 Canadian Challenge Sled Dog Race. The money will support checkpoint and trail preparations, and the in-kind support will cover site preparation and oversight.

The Town of La Ronge provided the same grant and in-kind support in 2024 and 2025 as well.

With that grant approved for the Canadian Challenge, the town has approximately $16,000 left to distribute in 2026 through its Community Grant Policy.
