La Ronge could realize 150 new housing units in coming years

A nearly $1.2 million grant from the Canada Housing and Infrastructure Fund will go a long way when it comes to helping the Town of La Ronge reach its goal of creating 150 housing units within the next couple of years.

On Tuesday, it was announced that the town would receive a total of $1,180,246 from the program, with $643,800 coming from the feds and $536,446 from the province. The funds will be used towards the installation of 860 meters of sewer main connecting sites at Bedford Drive and Louis Road to a nearby sewage pumping station.

The project will enable the potential construction of approximately 124 new housing units.

“The town is taking a leadership role and investing its own money to address regional housing needs,” administrator Lyle Hannan wrote in an email to larongeNOW.

“Without contributions from the provincial and federal governments, the cost would be a further drain on the town, taking funding away from other infrastructure needs. Housing is a critical need of the community, and it will help fill job vacancies that exist currently and provide opportunities for growth.”

The town has already commenced work related to the project, such as site clearing and preparation. The sewer and infrastructure work has now proceeded to detailed design for tendering, and construction is set for next spring and summer. The sewer line is being installed from the site to Sewage Pump Station 3.

With an additional 124 housing units to be constructed at the Bedford Drive and Louis Road area, it will give the town a large boost when it comes to meeting council’s housing goal of 150 units. The town is already nearing 50 units built.

“If the projects currently in development are constructed as planned, the town will realize over 200 units within the next year,” Hannan noted.

Funding for the La Ronge project was just one of several announced by Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River Liberal MP Buckey Belanger and Saskatchewan’s Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Lori Carr on Tuesday. A total of $74 million was announced for improved water, wastewater, drainage and sewer infrastructure across the province.
