CCHS curling team punches ticket to provincials

La Ronge’s Churchill Community High School (CCHS) girls curling team has earned a spot at provincials.

They went undefeated at this weekend’s Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association Regional Girls Curling Championships held at the Mel Hegland Uniplex. They dominated both games they played with the first against Choiceland (15-0) and the second against Tisdale (10-3).

Other teams who competed came from Prince Albert, Meath Park and Martensville. Since La Ronge were regional hosts, Martensville automatically became the second team to advance to provincials.

“It was nice to see a whole lot of people coming out from the community. We had a little bit more than 50 people who came to be spectators, so that was very nice,” said Coach James Kissick.

“It was nice to see a little energy in the rink and have some people show up who maybe haven’t been around in a little while.”

The CCHS curling team consists of Heidi Hardcastle (skip), Alison O’Brien (lead), Idabelle Llorente Roque (second), and Jovie Herperger (third). They previously were named district champions earlier this month after going undefeated in a tournament in Prince Albert.

Hardcastle, who is a Grade 12 student, explained the team has been working hard to be able to compete as strongly as they have this season.

“We have been training for three years in a row, and these past few months, we have been training many times a week. Just this past month, it has been every day,” she said.

Llorente Roque, who is in Grade 11, noted it has been heartwarming to see so many people cheering them on. She thinks they have a good shot at earning a medal at provincials in Martensville next weekend.

“With all the practice we have gotten, I think we might have a chance to at least get up there on the podium,” Llorente Roque said.
