Celebration marks start of long-term care facility construction

Approximately 50 people came together at the La Ronge Health Centre on Tuesday to celebrate the start of construction of the La Ronge long-term care facility.

The event was organized by the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and it was attended by Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson, La Ronge Mayor Joe Hordyski, physician executive of Integrated Northern Health Dr. Stephanie Young, executive director of Community Care Branch Brad Havervold and others.

“We had refreshments, cake, coffee water, fruit, there were three long-term care residents and some staff who came up to celebrate and participated,” said Kellie Stroeder, the director of Continuing Care in the Northeast.

“Today’s event was to celebrate the construction going forward for the expansion of the long-term care home project, which also includes dialysis, an adult day program, expanded space for therapies and home care, a new cafeteria, main kitchen and loading dock.”

The three-storey, two-wing per-floor care home will include 80 resident rooms and will be owned and operated by the SHA. Ledcor Construction Limited began construction of the building this month and are actively looking to hire carpenters, specifically within concrete forming with commercial construction.

SHA Workforce Planning was also present at the event and were distributing information about available jobs such as salaries, positions and where to obtain the education for the positions if needed.

“We’re really working hard on having solid plans to have staffing in place,” Stroeder said.

“We’ve learned from what Meadow Lake has gone through and we’re trying to be proactive in having discussions with the community on things that we see as potential barriers to recruiting such as housing and daycare, so there have been community talks with multiple municipalities, government agencies. We’ve started those conversations already and I think those conversations will keep going.”

Construction of the new facility is expected to be substantially complete by late 2026.
