Saskatchewan residents may want to secure anything that isn’t nailed down as a couple of fast-moving weather systems prepares to bring powerful winds to the province this weekend.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a number of wind warnings for central parts of the province on Saturday as a clipper system expected to move through, bringing strong winds.

Wind gusts could reach as high as 100 km/h, ECCC says, as the system sweeps through. Central Saskatchewan could experience some of the strongest gusts.

At those speeds, unsecured outdoor items can be blown around, and residents are encouraged to secure lightweight outdoor furniture, garbage bins, decorations and other loose objects.

Travel may become difficult, particularly along open stretches of highway. Drivers of high-profile vehicles, including semi-trucks, RVs and vehicles towing trailers, should be prepared for strong crosswinds.

The wind could also create challenges for rural residents, with open fields and exposed roadways offering little shelter from the wind.

Strong winds can also bring down tree branches and cause isolated power outages.

Although the wind is forecast to gradually ease by afternoon, the blustery conditions may not be finished after today, with another weather system expected to bring additional wind to the Prairies later in the weekend.

Despite the windy conditions, temperatures are forecast to remain above seasonal averages across much of the province, with daytime highs reaching the low to mid-teens in some communities.
